We're in the third day of NaNoWriMo. Hopefully you're at 5k. I'm a little behind but I have a nice long weekend to catch up. Post your success down below. We will be doing weekly updates throughout the month.
There is also only one month until the genre picking on December 1 so get ready! We are less than one month away from the competition that inspired Random Genre Month: NaNoWriMo. I hope that you are all competing in this exciting competition and know that we will be writing along with you and posting our updates on the RGM blog. Let us know down below if you, too, are going to be writing and what you're planning on doing. We'd love to hear from you!
This month has really been amazing. Just in the past twenty days we have nearly tripled the amount of RGM writers and we are still going strong with the sign ups. We can already tell that this is going to be a great year for writers.
And with just eleven days left we are coming even closer to the moment that you get to start writing your nevol. Since we are getting so close, we would like to show everyone where we are at on the genre spectrum. About half of our writers have already chosen what genre they are going to write with and the most popular seems to be horror, which makes up 48.6% percent of the genres that people have chosen. Here is the look at the other genre stats: Young Adult - 27% Young Horror - 13.5% Erotic Fiction- 2.7% Erotic Horror-8.1% So far we have had no representation of a combination of all three nor a combination of young adult and erotic fiction. Of course, that is something that we were expecting. As we head into these final days of preparation, keep planning those nevols and getting ready and we'll see if horror keeps it's large lead or if another genre will take control. Jack Tomorrow is Random Genre Month! I hope that you all have a great New Years and a wonderful Random Genre Month! Good luck!
And....I'm not prepared at all.
Sometimes when I am doing a competition like NaNoWriMo or Random Genre Month, I'll have things planned out an entire month before I start writing. Sometimes, like this time, though, it is the complete opposite. I haven't even started to plan what my novel is going to be about. I know that it is going to be horror and I have the basic idea of what the novel is going to be about but besides that I have no clue. Maybe I have an excuse. December is always a crazy month: dealing with the surge in RGM signups, preparing for the holidays, trying to get everything done before the year ends, its a crazy time. I still freak out, though, knowing that January will be here very quickly and I may be unprepared for the competition. Hopefully, once things start to die down, though, I can focus on my novel. We'll have some more information coming up soon. Until then, happy writing. Jack Over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing a little information about the genres. Here is what you need to know about writing erotic fiction.
Erotic Fiction is a genre that has often been subject to criticism and taboo. There has been attempted censorship and banning over the years and it still to this day a genre that many people frown upon. We here at Random Genre Month don't though. In fact, we have randomly chosen it thrice. In 2012 a good amount of our competitors put Erotic Fiction as their genres. Erotic Fiction has it's place in ancient history. There are early poems of this genre dating back to ancient Greece and Rome. Erotic Fiction grew more popular in the seventeenth century where books like The Life and Adventures of Miss Fanny Hill were published. Almost immediately after these books were published, they were subject to criticism, yet the writing continued and remained popular. Even when laws tried to rid the world of the writings with the Obscene Publications Act of 1857, erotic fiction is still a popular genre to this day, especially with novels such as Fifty Shades of Grey. Years done erotic fiction: 2011, 2012, 2013 For those of you that are hoping to learn a little more about Erotic Fiction, check out these websites: http://www.filamentmagazine.com/2011/04/nine-ways-to-write-better-erotic-fiction/ http://museituppublishing.com/bookstore2/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=89&Itemid=82 Of course, the best way to get better is by reading novels of the genre that you are planning on writing so spend your holidays with an erotic novel in preparation for RGM 2013. We've been keeping track of the genres that people like most on our site and we're finally here to show you what genres you liked the most. We had a very large response to our polls and feedback and we drew the numbers from a few different sources on the site from the past few years. What we found out is that the genres are, for the most part, equally spread out. There were a few that stood out, though. The winner by far was Horror Fiction, which accounted for 11% of the votes. Personally, the latter is one of the genres that I hope gets picked this Saturday. I've never written it before but I think it would be fun. In second, there was a tie at 9% between a few genres. Science Fiction which we did our first year, Young Adult/Youth, Adventure, and Fantasy. Most of the other genres were in the 5-7% range with a few falling below at four percent. The two that did were Mainstream Fiction and Religious/New Age, two that we have never done before at Random Genre Month. With a majority wanting genres such as Horror and Fantasy, maybe it would be a benefit to writers everywhere if one of the least enjoyable genres are chosen. They tend to be genres that you don't hear about all of the time but maybe more people will start to enjoy it if they start to write it. This Saturday we'll find out who's going to write what and we'll see if the popular genres are the ones that are chosen. See you then, Jack And the 2013 Genres are... The day is almost here: Genre Picking Day.
Next Saturday, the RGM staff will get together and will all chose the genres for the 2013 season of Random Genre Month. It'll be a day unlike any other and for the first time, the genres will be chosen at the RGM Staff Genre Picking Party. And you will by there too to witness. Make sure to follow us on Twitter, refresh the website, and check your emails because the first thing we do after we chose the genres is make sure you know what they're going to be. This morning we announced the times for the genre picking and here they are: First Genre: 9am CST Second Genre: 12pm CST Third Genre: 3pm CST We hope that you'll be following along throughout the day. Sean will be tweeting to keep everyone up to date and we look forward to writing with you this year! Jack You may have seen this hashtag somewhere around Twitter. If you have, then you can thank our new director and co-director of Social Media, Sean and Hap, respectively.
This past week a few of our positions have changed. Sean and Hap were promoted and Julia's position was changed from Director of Social Media so she could run the financial side of things at Random Genre Month. So make sure you follow us on Twitter to hear more from the two of them. #Happywriting Jack |
