We wish you luck this November with your writing!

It is that time of year again! NaNoWriMo is in less than a week so we may not be updating the site as much, but you will be hearing a lot from Julia and you'll be receiving updates in the next month before Random Genre Month!
We wish you luck this November with your writing! Jack

The need to be versatile. That is what Random Genre Month is about. I just posted a similar thing to this on my blog and I thought that this would be important to share to the Random Genre Month world. This is why you should sign up for Random Genre Month. The reason is right here.
The main reason for Random Genre Month is to expand your writing boundaries and to get you to try new things in writing. Many writers stick with one thing and keep working until they master it, but I believe that a good writer is multi-talented. Let me use myself as an example. My genres that I write are YA/Youth and Science Fiction (as I have mentioned, not the alien type) but with Random Genre Month, there's a good thing that I am going to be pushed into doing something new. Being versatile as a writer can not only attract different types of readers, but there's a good chance that you'd make a lot more money. Say you are an avid Mystery writer and then come out with an amazing Romance novel. The romance readers will read your book, perhaps fall in love with you, and they may try your mystery novel. Now there is no guarantee that they will love it, but what if they do? They tried something new as well and perhaps found a new reading style. It broadens not only you, but the reader's horizons. So do you want to be that writer that does one thing and one thing only, or do you want to attract a wide range of people? I know that I want to be more of a double-threat and perhaps a triple-threat or even greater than that in the writing world. You know how if you can act, sing, and dance, then you can do it all in the entertainment business? Well if you can be versatile with your writing, then you can do it all in the writing business. No need to thank us when your published. We know deep down that you'll be so glad you tried that new genre. Once again a countdown has been brought to Random Genre Month plus a few minor adjustments to our site. So we have a little over 70 days left until Random Genre Month so we have to start preparing. Today I visited the bookstore. The whole store was rearranged so in looking for the section I was looking for I came across the Religious New Age section. Now normally I would never look at that part of the bookstore but I saw what kind of books are in that genre. If I were you I'd be looking at a few different genres so that you can see what to expect.
So as we enter into the NaNoWriMo seasoson, we will be a little busy but we'll be keeping you posted on what's happening in the pre RGM season. Thank you to everyone who made Random Genre Month's first birthday special. One year ago we were launched to the web and ever since then we have enjoyed every minute of it! Thanks to those who helped us figure out the coding error on the website! That was soon solved and we were back online without everything scrolling across the page. Who knew it would happen like that? Well, anyway thank you for a great birthday!
So tomorrow is our birthday! We are already making preparations and we are planning on Tweeting throughout the day our Happy Birthday wishes #happybirthdayrgm and make sure to follow us on Twitter to keep track of all the latest Twitter updates, brought to you by Julia, our head of Social Media. So get ready to blow out the candles because it will be one birthday party you won't forget!
Only six more days until the big day! Yes, Random Genre Month is turning one. It's very exciting! All the celebration events will be taking place over at the More page so check over there this Thursday. We will have a brief summary about the founding of Random Genre Month, the website launch, and also we will do a special blog feature of a randomly chosen competitor so if you would like to get a chance to be featured then make sure you Sign Up! So get ready to blow out the candles, Random Genre Month, because you're turning on
As of today, the picture of the month is up! Trying to tie it in with a Halloween theme (September does't really have a good holiday for noveling cartoons) we go from this... to this...
Many of you know the returning staff member Andrew who mostly got started with NaNoWriMo (which led to RGM) because he liked playing on the forums. (By the way, we are working on forums possibly in the future, but that is not a guarantee) We don't blame him for that. The forums are pretty fun! Andrew brings some fun to the writing process and maybe one day he'll write his great novel, but until then he'll keep on pestering me about the pre-NaNo time when I could never finish one no matter how hard I tried.
Well, anyway, it's Andrew's birthday today. We just would like to take this opportunity to celebrate that. Happy Birthday Andrew! So many people were wondering how Random Genre Month works, so I decided to take the time to write about how everything happens. As you know, RGM is a writing challenge, and it is not the easiest one because it may be pushing you to write a new genre. Also, it takes place right after NaNoWriMo ends, and we know that many of you do NaNoWriMo but it works out pretty well if you finish your 50K from NNWM and then immediately go into planning for RGM. It lets you recharge because you can't start any new projects in between the two competitions, well, unless you want to do something crazy. In that case, go right ahead.
So how does Random Genre Month work? Well December 1st is the day that we chose the genres. I will be choosing the genre at 6:59 am CST and then it will be posted on the website and on Twitter at 7:00 am. Then you have one of the genres. Last year we chose this genre at 7:30 and it wasn't a good genre, in fact, no one wrote from that genre, so if the first one is a genre you don't like, then don't worry. I know that we are open to trying new things, but there are a few things we definitely don't want to jump into. Anyway, there will be a large break between the first and second genre picking. We aren't 100% sure on the plans, but we are thinking about getting all of the staff together and we will all pick the second genre at 4:29, then it will be up a minute later. Finally, the last genre will be chosen at 7:59 that night, and then posted at 8:00. Please remember that these times are subject to change. Once the third genre is chosen, then you have all three. The option to chose your genre will be open and you can start to plan your novel. Please note that you do not have to chose your genre at a specific time. We need the genre by December 31st, but you can always switch after that, as long as it is one of the three genres. So you have a month to plan and get ready for Random Genre Month, then, with the new year, you start your new novel. |
