Many people have been wondering about how Random Genre Month works so I decided to make this not only a blog post, but a page on the Random Genre Month site so that you can see it all of the time. Later we are going to move this page under MORE where the challenge button and the fliers are stored as well as the feedback page which you guys have really helped us out with. Since it is close to Random Genre Month, though, this will be here with tips about how to stay sane during the next few months.

            December 1st

Hopefully, yesterday, you finished your novel. If you didn't, than an even better excuse to do Random Genre Month. You can use this to get redemption.
I believe that this is the most exciting day of Random Genre Month. It's almost like a Christmas for writers. The Random Genre Month staff will be waking up early so that we can get ready for the unveiling of the first genre. Now, some people were thinking that it was an unfair advantage because the staff gets to see it first. That's not true. The staff picks it at 6:59 AM CST and then posts it to the web at 7:00. So we know it just a few seconds before you do.
And then you have your first genre. If you are absolutely sure that that is the genre for you, then go ahead and start planning your novel. If it isn't the genre for you, then wait. Last year no one wrote the genre that was chosen first, but that was okay. The other ones were much better and they found out about them a little later.
Then, at 4:00 PM, we will chose the second genre and then at around 10:30 we will choose the final one.
And then you have the three genres. The moment after the final genre is chosen, you will be able to enter into the website which genre you would like and then you can plan your novel.
Or, you can wait until the last moment to choose your genre and not plan anything at all, your choice.

            December 31

You're planned (or not planned), ready, and refreshed to begin yet another month of writing. Midnight comes and the new year, and January, begins. You begin writing to get your 1613 words for the day. Write that much each day and you will have a 50,000 word novel. Easy as pie.

            January 1

At midnight, the whole website will get a new feature added. At the top of each page there will be a place to update your word count. Our staff will be working round the clock to make sure everything is working correctly.

            January 15/16

Some of you will be at 25K, where you need to be, some of you will already be finish. Some of you will be a little behind, but that's okay. You can write a novel in less than 10 days if you try to, so it is entirely possible to finish if you're behind at the halfway mark. At this moment, you will be beginning the third week. The wall that you hit the week before is behind you and you got over it, the finish line is closer and it is all down hill for here. You may be falling in love with your novel, or hating it. You may have discovered that you're really good at this genre you never chose before. No thanks necessary when you're a professional.

            January 26

Validation can begin. There will be a submit page that is entered and we will check everyone's word count. Then you get a special winner's banner on your page. If you're not finished yet, that's okay, you have five more days.

            January 31

The end is here. You finish your novel, look back on the month in awe of what you've accomplished. Not only have you written a novel, but a novel of a genre you may have not written before. That is a feat that you certainly can brag about.

            February 1

Sleep in. Relax. Don't think about your novel. Just celebrate what you did in the past month because you deserved it. Congratulations novelist. You did it.
