Horror and supernatural
For centuries, horror fiction has terrified and excited humans. Present in many ancient cultures, horror has dealt with many topics such as death, the Devil, witches, vampires, and ghosts. In the 1700s, gothic horror began to grow. In 1764, the first novel combining supernaturalism and realism was released, The Castle of Otranto. Since then, gothic and horror fiction has grown to a very large and popular genre.
Intended to strike fear into the minds of their readers, horror provokes strong emotions with images in literature. Many times it features some sort of monster, either physical or emotional.
There are many different types of horror fiction, such as gothic, natural, and psychological.
Like most genres, there is a very wide range of topics that can be used. Anything dealing with frightening events or the supernatural is considered horror/supernatural.
As for writing horror and supernatural, the best horror writers say that the most important thing is to use your own fears in the novel. If you're scaring yourself, then you're on the right path.
